For most general pests, you’ll notice a clear drop within 3 to 7 days, with full clearance taking 2 weeks to a few months depending on the pest — cockroaches and ants clear in 2 to 3 weeks, rats in 1 to 2 weeks, and termites in 3 to 6 months. The treatment itself takes an hour or two on the day. What takes time is the part you don’t watch: the bait spreading through a nest you can’t see. Here’s the honest, pest-by-pest version so you know what’s normal and when to actually start worrying.

The First 48 Hours — Why You See More, Not Fewer

This is the part nobody warns you about, so here it is first. In the day or two after a treatment, you will often see more pests, not fewer. More cockroaches out in the open. Ants suddenly swarming the kitchen counter. This is not the treatment failing. It’s the treatment working.

Gel bait and residual products flush insects out of the cracks and harbourages where they normally hide. They come out, they feed on the bait, and then they die — but they have to come out first. So the spike you see on day 2 is the colony walking into the trap. By the end of week 1, the numbers start falling off a cliff.

The rule of thumb. More sightings in the first 48 hours = good. Same level of activity after 2 full weeks = time to ask for a follow-up. Judging a job on day 3 is the single most common mistake homeowners make.

Cockroaches (lipas): 3–7 days to drop, 2–3 weeks to clear

For cockroaches treated with gel bait, you’ll see numbers drop within 3 to 7 days. Full clearance of a German cockroach nest takes 2 to 3 weeks. The reason it’s not faster comes down to biology: one German cockroach egg case carries up to 40 eggs, and those eggs sit protected inside the case where the first round of bait can’t reach them.

So the first treatment kills the adults and nymphs walking around now. Then the eggs hatch. The new nymphs walk over the same bait, and that’s the round that actually finishes the colony. This is the whole reason a proper cockroach job runs across three visits inside a fortnight, timed to the hatch cycle — not one visit and a wave goodbye.

Ants (semut): 1–2 weeks

Ant trails usually look worse for the first few days. Workers find the bait, recruit the whole trail, and for a couple of days your counter looks busier than ever. Then it thins out over 1 to 2 weeks as the bait gets carried back and reaches the queen. Kill the queen and the colony collapses.

The exception is ghost ants and other species that run multiple queens across satellite nests. Those can take a few weeks longer because you’re not killing one colony, you’re killing several connected ones. If you spray a visible trail instead of baiting it, you kill the workers you can see and the colony reroutes — which is why DIY spray feels like it works for three days and then the trail is back. Rats (tikus): 1–2 weeks

Rat activity drops within a few days of bait stations and traps going in, and most of the active rats in a home are cleared within 1 to 2 weeks. The thumping in your ceiling usually goes quiet first, because that’s the roof rats moving on once the food and the safe runs are disrupted.

But rats are the one pest where the timeline lies to you if you only count the kill. The real clock is on the entry points. Seal the gaps around pipes, the broken roof tiles, the open drain holes — do that and the problem stays gone. Skip it, and a new rat moves into the empty territory within a month, because the smell trails are still there. The Fire and Rescue Department regularly lists rodent-chewed wiring as a contributor to house fires, which is why we treat exclusion as the actual job, not the bait. Termites (anai-anai): 3–6 months

Termites are the long game. Baiting takes 3 to 6 months to destroy a colony, and there’s no shortcut around that. The stations hold slow-acting bait that worker termites feed on and carry back underground. It has to pass through the whole colony — workers, soldiers, and eventually the queen who’s being fed by everyone else — before the colony stops functioning. Slow is the point. If it killed the workers too fast, they’d never carry enough back to reach the queen.

Soil treatment works on a different clock. It injects a chemical barrier into the ground around the foundation, so termites crossing it pick up the termiticide and pass it on. The barrier is in place the same day, but full colony elimination is still measured in weeks. Either way, anyone who promises a dead termite colony in a week is selling you something that doesn’t exist.

Don’t break the mud tubes. If you find mud tubes on a wall, leave them. They tell the technician where the colony is travelling. Smash them and you’ve thrown away the map — and the termites just reroute. Send a photo first.

Bed Bugs and Mosquitoes

Bed bugs (pepijat) split into two timelines. Heat treatment raises the room to 50–60°C and kills every stage in a single day, eggs included. Chemical treatment is cheaper but needs 2 to 3 visits spaced 14 days apart to catch the eggs that survive each round — so plan for 3 to 4 weeks start to finish. One round is almost never enough, especially in furnished rentals.

Mosquitoes (nyamuk) are the fastest knock-down of all. Fogging clears the flying adults within hours, but the relief only lasts a week or two unless you also kill the larvae in standing water. Larviciding the breeding sites is what actually moves the needle. Selangor carries the highest dengue caseload in Malaysia per Ministry of Health bulletins, so the difference between a one-week knockdown and a real reduction matters.
