Is Pest Control Safe for Babies and Pregnant Women? What Nomobug Uses and Why
By Yusof Izzat, Lead Pest Control Technician · Updated 9 June 2026 · 8 min read

Done properly, professional pest control is safe for a home with a baby or a pregnant person — Nomobug uses Provecta, a BASF professional gel-bait and crack-and-crevice range designed for use in occupied homes. There is no airborne fog, no evacuation, no re-entry window — the family stays home as normal. The single thing that matters most for safety and effectiveness happens after the visit: do not mop or wash the floor along the wall edges, because that’s where the residual sits on the insect travel paths. The unsafe scenario most Malaysian families actually face is not a professional visit — it is a parent panic-spraying a can of Baygon in a closed kitchen with the baby in the next room. This article covers what Provecta actually is, why families don’t need to leave the house, and the one after-care rule that decides whether the treatment lasts. Honest, no marketing.
What “Safe” Actually Means in Residential Pest Control
Safety in residential pest control is not a single chemical question. It’s the sum of four things, and any one of them being wrong is what causes problems:
- The active ingredient. What’s actually in the spray or the bait.
- The concentration. A label-rate dilution and an over-concentrated bucket of the same chemical are two completely different exposure profiles.
- The application method. Gel bait placed in a cabinet crack has almost no airborne exposure. A fogger sprayed into a closed room has a lot.
- Whether the application method requires evacuation at all. Old fog-the-room methods did, because they dispersed chemical through the whole air volume of the room. Modern gel-bait + crack-and-crevice application doesn’t, because there is no airborne dispersion to clear.
The takeaway: “is pest control safe” is the wrong question. The right question is “is this product, applied this way, in this household, safe for my family?” A technician who can’t answer all four of those clearly is the part of the equation worth worrying about, not the chemicals themselves. The good news is that the answer for a properly applied Provecta treatment in a Malaysian home is yes — the family stays home, no evacuation, no after-room ventilation, and the after-care rule in the next section keeps it working.
What Provecta Is and Why Nomobug Uses It

Provecta is a professional pest control product range made by BASF, the German chemical company that has spent decades developing low-toxicity actives for occupied-home use. Nomobug standardised on Provecta in 2024 because the line was specifically designed for kitchens, food premises, and homes with infants and pregnant residents — places where the old fog-the-room approach was always the wrong tool. The Provecta range covers:
- Cockroach gel bait — applied as small dots inside cabinet hinges, behind the fridge, and in the crack beside the stove. The forager eats the bait, walks home, and the colony eats its own. No airborne component, no surface residue families touch.
- Ant gel bait — sugar-based for sugar-feeding species (ghost ants, big-headed ants) and protein-based for pharaoh ants in bathrooms. Applied at the entry point of the trail, never on open counter surfaces.
- Crack-and-crevice residual — used on insect travel paths along skirting boards, around door frames, and along external perimeter walls. Not on open floor, not on countertops, not in nurseries.
What Nomobug does not use:
- Total-release foggers (“bug bombs”) — over-deposit chemical on every surface in the room, including the cot rail. Skip entirely.
- Organophosphates (chlorpyrifos, malathion) — phased out of residential use in most countries. No good reason to be in a home.
- Unlabelled or self-mixed “concentrated” formulations — if a technician can’t tell you the exact product they’re applying, that’s the answer to whether you should let them apply it near your baby.
You can verify any Provecta product yourself on the Department of Agriculture registered pesticides list before the technician arrives. Ask the technician for the specific Provecta SKU they’re bringing if you want to look it up.
“Best service, the technician was very helpful and friendly. They did a wonderful job and gave me reassurance that the cockroaches will not come back anymore. Most importantly they used chemicals that are not dangerous to children! Would recommend this service especially for families”
— Yong Han Chung (Google review, Dec 2023). The chemical question is the first one almost every parent asks. Hearing the answer straight from another family is more useful than a product spec sheet.
Why You Don’t Have to Leave the House
This is the question almost every parent calls to ask, and it’s where Nomobug’s product choice changes the answer most older guides give you. Because the Provecta application is gel bait into cracks and crevices plus targeted residual along insect travel paths, there is no airborne fog and no surface residue at concentrations that require an exclusion window. Families stay home during the visit. You do not need to plan a 6-hour empty house, you do not need to take the baby to grandma’s for the afternoon, you do not need to rebook because someone in the household can’t leave.
What the technician actually does on a visit:
- Inspects the kitchen, bathrooms, and any rooms the household has flagged. Looks for trails, droppings, egg cases, and entry points.
- Places small dots of Provecta gel bait inside cabinet hinges, behind the fridge near the warm motor, in the crack beside the stove, and at ant trail entry points. Children cannot reach these spots.
- Applies targeted residual along the floor edge against interior walls (the insect travel path), behind appliances, and along the external perimeter wall outside the house. Not on open floor, not on countertops, not on furniture, not in nurseries.
- Walks the household through after-care before leaving. The single most important rule is in the next section.
You do not need to:
- Leave the home before, during, or after the treatment.
- Plan a re-entry window or run fans to ventilate.
- Wash sheets, clothes, soft toys, or curtains that were in the home during the visit.
- Wipe down counters, dining tables, or any surface the technician didn’t treat.
What is worth covering before the technician arrives is small: open food on the counter, water bowls on the floor, and anything the baby puts directly in their mouth (dummies, the high-chair tray, bottles). The technician will tell you on arrival if anything else needs moving.
The One After-Care Rule That Decides Whether It Lasts

This is the rule almost every customer who complains “the cockroaches came back fast” gets wrong. The residual Nomobug applies is on the insect travel paths — the strip of floor along the edge of walls, inside and outside the house. Insects walk along those edges, not down the middle of the kitchen. If you mop those wall-edge strips with soap and water, you remove the residual within hours and the treatment is over.
After a Nomobug visit, do not mop or wash these three zones:
- The floor along the edge of interior walls. This is the insect travel path inside the house. Insects move along skirting lines, not across the open middle of a room.
- The kitchen floor — especially the strip next to the walls and under cabinets. If you must mop the kitchen, mop the middle of the floor and stop short of the wall edge. The strip along the wall is where the residual is doing the work.
- The floor outside the house along the exterior walls. The perimeter strip along the outside of the building. Sweeping is fine. Hosing down or scrubbing with soap removes the residual.
What you can mop normally:
- The centre of any floor — kitchen, living room, dining area, bedrooms.
- Counter tops, dining tables, the high-chair tray.
- The bathroom floor, except the strip along the skirting if the bathroom was treated.
Said another way — the residual is on a perimeter strip a few centimetres wide along every wall. Stay off that strip with a mop for 14 days and the treatment lasts the full warranty period. Mop it on the way home from the office and the warranty starts ticking down immediately. This is the single most important thing a family with a baby can know about how to make a pest control visit actually work.
Treating a Nursery or a Pregnant Person’s Bedroom
Two small adjustments for the rooms parents are most cautious about:
- Tell the technician on arrival. “We have a 3-month-old / I’m 12 weeks pregnant / the nursery is the room on the left.” The technician will skip residual application inside that specific room and rely on gel bait placed in cracks behind the cot, behind the wardrobe, and along the skirting joint — out of any baby’s reach.
- Keep that room’s wall-edge strip off the mop list too. Same rule as the rest of the house — don’t mop along the skirting of the nursery for 14 days. Anywhere else in the room, mop normally.
A recent job in Shah Alam — family with a 3-month-old, ghost ants in the kitchen and pantry, mother was nervous about anything chemical inside the house with the baby around. We talked through the Provecta application before starting — gel bait dots at five entry points inside, residual along the kitchen wall edge and outside the house. Family stayed home for the whole visit. We walked through the “don’t mop the wall edge” rule before leaving. By the third return visit at day 14 the trails were gone. The mother messaged a month later — no recurrence, baby fine, mother more relaxed than when we first arrived.

If the problem is small, the safest answer for a family home is also the cheapest one — handle it yourself with the lowest-exposure tool, which is gel bait you place in a baby-inaccessible spot. Save the call if:
- You’ve seen 2 or 3 cockroaches across the last month and no egg cases. A tube of professional-grade sugar gel bait at the back of each kitchen cabinet handles it in 2 weeks. No spray, no professional visit, no re-entry window.
- One thin trail of small ants on the kitchen counter going to a removable food source. The full DIY ant protocol is here — entirely bait-based, no spray.
- One big American cockroach on the porch at night near the drain. Outdoor problem. Cap the drain and check again next week.
Call a professional when the infestation is established — multiple sightings per day, visible egg cases, rats in the ceiling, multiple ant trails in multiple rooms, or any species that genuinely warrants intervention. At that scale the risk of leaving it untreated is bigger than the small managed risk of a properly applied family-safe treatment. CUSTOMER REVIEWS

I’m giving him a 5-star rating.
Overall, from the last two visits, I found many spots/nests. The gel bait and Provcta were very impressive. The effect was very noticeable; the cockroaches were no longer visible in the kitchen. There were fewer in the living room. Today was my last visit for baiting and spraying. Hopefully, there will be no more cockroaches after this, God willing.
Highly recommended!

Nomobug has just completed their second service at my home, and once again I’m extremely impressed.
