What to Expect After a Pest Control Treatment — The First 48 Hours Explained

Here’s the part most people aren’t told: in the first 24 to 48 hours after a pest control treatment, you’ll often see more pests, not fewer — and that’s the treatment working, not failing. The products flush insects out of hiding before they die. What you do in those two days decides whether the job sticks: leave the bait alone, don’t scrub the wall edges, and don’t reach for your own can of spray. The rest of this guide walks through exactly what’s normal, when it’s safe to clean, and when a follow-up is actually worth a call.
The First 48 Hours: What’s Normal

The single most common message we get is some version of: “You treated yesterday and now there are MORE lipas. Did it not work?” It worked. What you’re seeing is the flushing effect. Gel bait and the residual band draw insects out of the cracks, drains, and gaps where they normally stay hidden. They come out, they feed, and then they die — but they have to come out first.
So a busier kitchen counter on day 2 is the colony walking into the trap. By the end of week 1, the numbers drop off a cliff. You’ll also start finding dead cockroaches and ants around the place for a week or two — sweep them up, it changes nothing.
A customer in Cheras messaged the morning after a cockroach baiting, in a bit of a panic — more lipas out than before we came. We told them one thing: don’t spray, don’t wipe the bait. Three days later, the message was just “all quiet now.” Day 2 is the worst it looks. It’s also the treatment doing its job.

When (and How) to Clean

You don’t have to live in a frozen house for a week. The treatment is targeted, so normal life carries on — with three small rules. Nomobug’s method puts gel bait into cracks and hinge gaps, plus a thin residual band along the wall edges where insects actually walk. That band is the invisible part that keeps working. Wash it away and you’ve cut the job short.
The three cleaning rules. 1. Wipe your counters and prep surfaces as normal — the bait isn’t on them. 2. Mop the open middle of the floor after 24 hours, but keep the mop away from the wall edges and skirting for 6 to 8 weeks. 3. Spot-clean spills near the edges with a damp cloth, not a flooded mop — and never wipe out the bait dots the technician placed.
The reason for the wall-edge rule is simple: that’s the highway. Cockroaches and ants travel along the join where the floor meets the wall, not across the open middle. The residual is placed exactly there for that reason. Mopping right up to the skirting on day 1 is the most common way people accidentally undo a good treatment.
What NOT to Do After Treatment
Most of these come from good intentions — people want to help the treatment along and end up working against it.
- Don’t spray your own insecticide over the treated areas. Retail sprays repel insects away from the bait. You want them walking to it. This is the number one mistake — and piling on extra household chemicals goes against the safe-use guidance the Ministry of Health publishes anyway.
- Don’t mop or scrub the wall edges and skirting for 6 to 8 weeks. That’s where the residual lives.
- Don’t wipe away the gel bait dots in the cracks and hinges. They look like nothing; they’re doing the work.
- Don’t deep-clean in a panic on day 2 because you saw more pests. The spike is expected. Give it the full two weeks.
- Don’t seal up cracks or move furniture against treated walls straight away — let the bait stay accessible to the pests it’s meant to reach.
Pets, Kids, and Coming Back Inside

This is the question that worries parents and pet owners most, so here’s the straight answer. With a gel-bait and crack-and-crevice treatment — the Provecta (BASF) range Nomobug uses — there is no airborne fog and no re-entry window. You don’t evacuate. Babies, pregnant residents, cats and dogs stay home as normal, both during and after.
The one thing to watch is pets nosing at the bait placements. Ask the technician to point out where the gel went so you can keep an eye on curious cats and dogs for the first day. The bait is placed in cracks and behind fixtures precisely so it’s hard for them to reach. The active ingredients in professional products are registered with the Department of Agriculture‘s pesticides list — worth confirming with any operator you book. For the fuller picture, we’ve written separately on whether pest control is safe for babies and pregnant women and safe for cats and dogs.
“Best service, the technician was very helpful and friendly. They did a wonderful job and gave me reassurance that the cockroaches will not come back anymore. Most importantly they used chemicals that are not dangerous to children. Would recommend this service especially for families.”
— Yong Han Chung, Google review. For families, the chemical question is always the first one — and the answer should be clear before the technician even starts.
When to Wait vs When to Call for a Follow-Up

Patience is the whole game here. Give a general pest treatment a full 2 weeks before you judge it. The day-2 spike, the dead bodies, the odd straggler in week 1 — all normal. What you’re watching for is the trend: by week 2 the activity should be a fraction of what it was.
Cockroaches are the clearest example of why one visit is rarely the end. One German cockroach egg case holds up to 40 eggs, protected inside the case where the first round of bait can’t reach. So the eggs hatch, the new nymphs walk over the same bait, and that second round is what finishes the colony. This is exactly why a proper job runs across three visits timed to the hatch cycle — it’s also why the spray-and-pray approach keeps cockroaches coming back.
Call for a follow-up when, after two full weeks, activity hasn’t dropped at all — or when you spot a brand-new problem (a fresh ant trail from a different direction, droppings in a new spot). With a 3-visit plan those follow-ups are already booked in. If you’re on a warranty-backed plan and pests persist within the window, the return visit is covered — that’s what the warranty is for.
Normal vs When to Worry — Quick Reference
If you only remember one thing, make it this table.
| What You See | Normal or Worry? | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| More cockroaches/ants on day 1–2 | Normal (flushing effect) | Leave the bait, don’t spray |
| Dead pests around the house for 1–2 weeks | Normal | Sweep them up |
| The odd straggler in week 1 | Normal | Wait it out |
| No drop at all after 2 full weeks | Worth a call | Ask for a follow-up |
| A brand-new infestation type | Worth a call | Send a photo on WhatsApp |
| Pet licking a bait placement | Watch it | Wipe that spot, tell the technician |

WhatsApp usOne last honest note: if you’ve only ever seen two or three cockroaches and no egg cases, you probably didn’t need a full treatment in the first place — a RM8 gel bait near the cabinet hinges would have handled it. Knowing when to wait and watch is half the battle. CUSTOMER REVIEWS

I’m giving him a 5-star rating.
Overall, from the last two visits, I found many spots/nests. The gel bait and Provcta were very impressive. The effect was very noticeable; the cockroaches were no longer visible in the kitchen. There were fewer in the living room. Today was my last visit for baiting and spraying. Hopefully, there will be no more cockroaches after this, God willing.
Highly recommended!

Nomobug has just completed their second service at my home, and once again I’m extremely impressed. They carried out contingency recurring control twice, especially targeting ants and cockroaches, and I really appreciate how they honor their warranty with such professionalism. The overall appointment scheduling and service management were smooth and reliable, which makes me feel very secure and well taken care of.
I’m very satisfied with the results and would highly recommend Nomobug to anyone looking for thorough pest control. Once my current contract finishes, I will definitely be renewing it.
It’s also worth highlighting that the same technician, Faris, has been consistently handling my house. He is punctual, polite, and highly professional. After completing the treatment, he provided a detailed report outlining his findings and preventive actions, even showing me examples of the control measures implemented. This level of transparency and care is rare, and I truly value it.
