A warehouse or factory is a different animal from a home or a shoplot. It’s big, it runs long hours, it takes deliveries all day, and it stores exactly what pests want to eat and nest in. Industrial pest control is built on exclusion and monitoring — sealing the ways in (loading bays first), intercepting rodents on a bait-station grid, trapping flying insects, watching the stored goods, and documenting all of it to audit standard. What’s different about industrial pest control?

Everything scales up, and the stakes change. In a home, a pest is a nuisance. In a warehouse or factory, a rat in the wrong place is a failed audit, a rejected shipment, or a product recall. So the whole approach shifts from “kill what’s here” to “keep it out and prove you’re keeping it out.”

Four things separate an industrial programme from a standard visit:

• Exclusion over spraying. The priority is sealing the building and intercepting pests at the perimeter, not fogging the inside.
• Permanent monitoring infrastructure. A grid of numbered external bait stations and internal monitoring points, insect light traps, and stored-product monitors — checked and logged every visit.
• Working around the operation. Treatment scheduled so it never contaminates goods or stops the line. No airborne spray over open product.

The pests that shut down an industrial audit

Three groups of pests do the damage on an industrial site, and each fails an audit in its own way:

• Rodents. The biggest risk by far. The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) comes up from drains and loading bays, the roof rat (Rattus rattus) runs the ceiling and racking, and the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) works indoors. Gnaw marks, droppings, or hair in stored goods can trigger an immediate recall — auditors treat any fresh rodent sign as critical.
• Flying insects. Houseflies (Musca domestica) from bins and drains, plus moths, walk and land on exposed product. Controlled with insect light traps and door management.
• Stored-product pests. These live in the goods — the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), and Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella) infest flour, grain, dried food, and packaging. They often arrive inside incoming stock, which is why goods-in inspection matters.

Cockroaches (Blattella germanica) round out the list in canteens, locker rooms, and any wet area of the plant.

Why loading bays are the number-one entry point

The loading bay is the one part of the building deliberately left open to the outside for hours at a time. It is, predictably, where most of the problem walks in. A rat needs a gap the width of a 20-sen coin; a warehouse gives it dozens.

The usual offenders, in the order we find them on a walkthrough:

• Gaps under roller shutters and dock doors. Worn seals and uneven floors leave a strip a rodent strolls through. Brush strips and dock seals close it.
• Dock levellers and their pits. The gap around a dock leveller is a permanent open channel unless it’s sealed and the pit kept clean.
• Doors propped open. The most common finding, and the cheapest fix — dock discipline plus air curtains at the openings.
• Drains and the surrounding hardstanding. Norway rats travel the drain network and surface at the bay.

Controlling a warehouse starts at the perimeter, not the aisles. A grid of tamper-proof external bait stations around the building intercepts rodents before they reach the goods, with internal monitoring points (non-toxic, so nothing toxic sits near stored product) picking up anything that gets past. Sealing the loading bay is the single highest-value job on the site — the same lesson that applies to the entry points rats use in any building.

How do you control flying insects in a warehouse?

Flying insects are controlled the way rodents are — intercept and monitor, don’t spray over stock. The workhorse is the insect light trap (also called an ILT or electric fly killer): a UV unit that draws flies in and catches them on a glue board or grid.

Placement is the whole game. Traps go where they’ll pull flies away from goods and open doors — never directly above a packing line or exposed product, where a catch could fall onto stock. Back that up with air curtains at loading doors, fast-closing or strip-curtain doors, and bin discipline outside so the flies aren’t breeding at the wall. The traps also earn their keep as monitoring devices: the catch is counted and logged each visit, so a rising trend shows up early and you can prove control to an auditor.

Stored-product pests — the ones in the goods

Stored-product pests are the sneaky ones, because they don’t walk in from outside — they arrive inside a pallet of incoming stock and breed in the goods themselves. Flour, grain, dried food, spices, pet food, and even the cardboard and packaging are all fair game.

You don’t spray your way out of these. The controls are inspection and monitoring: check incoming goods at goods-in, run pheromone monitoring traps for the key species (Tribolium, Lasioderma, Plodia), rotate stock first-in-first-out so nothing sits long enough to breed a population, and keep spillage cleaned up. Catch an infested pallet at receiving and you’ve stopped it; miss it and it seeds the whole store.

What documentation do industrial audits require?

For any premises subject to HACCP, ISO 22000, MOH, or a customer or brand audit, the pest programme is judged on its paperwork as much as its results. Pest control is a prerequisite programme, and the auditor wants the evidence file. Expect to produce:

• A documented service contract — scope, pests covered, visit frequency.
• Dated service reports — findings, treatment, products used, signed each visit.
• A numbered site map — every external bait station, internal monitor, and fly unit plotted and numbered to match the reports.
• Monitoring logs with trend analysis — activity over time, so you can demonstrate the trend is flat or falling.
• Corrective-action records — what was found, what was done, whether it worked.
• Safety Data Sheets — for every product on site, using HACCP-certified products suitable for the premises.

One detail sinks a lot of sites: auditors check the records were kept in real time, not written up the week before the audit. A tidy file that doesn’t match the actual service dates reads as backfilled and does more harm than an honest gap.
