After a few days of heavy rain, the house suddenly feels under siege — a rat thumping in the ceiling, lipas by the bathroom drain, flying insects circling the porch light. You’re not imagining it. Heavy rain floods the drains, burrows and soil where pests normally live, so they move up and in — which is why rats, cockroaches, termite swarmers and mosquitoes all spike in the days after a downpour. The upside is that this is predictable. A bit of preparation before and after the rain makes a real difference to what ends up inside.

Why Heavy Rain Drives Pests Indoors

Most pests in a Malaysian neighbourhood don’t actually live in your house. They live in the drains, the soil, the longkang and the empty lot next door. Heavy rain floods all of it at once. Tunnels fill with water, food gets washed away, and the only dry, warm place left standing is the building with a gap under the door. So they come to you.

It’s worth saying plainly: this isn’t about your house being dirty. It’s geography. A spotless home next to a flooded drain still gets the visitors. The longer and harder the rain, the bigger the push indoors — which is why the worst of it tends to land in the day or two after a real downpour, not during it. Forecasts from MET Malaysia are a decent early warning for when to get ahead of it.

Rats Move Up and In

Rats are usually the first thing you’ll notice, normally as thumping in the ceiling at night. When storm drains and ground burrows flood, the rats living in them have to climb to stay dry — up pipes, up walls, into the roof void. In Malaysia that’s often the roof rat (Rattus rattus) and the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) heading for the ceiling, while the bigger brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) from the drains pushes into ground floors and kitchens.

Cockroaches Come Up Through the Drains

The big cockroaches you see after rain — the ones that fly a little and scuttle fast — are American cockroaches (lipas besar). They live in drains, sewers and wet outdoor voids, not inside your cabinets. When the drains back up, they come up through floor traps, gully traps and gaps around pipes, looking for dry ground.

Rain Triggers Termite Swarms

Right after the first heavy rains, especially in the evening, you might see a cloud of flying insects swirling around a light — then a scatter of small, equal-sized wings on the floor the next morning. Those are termite swarmers (alates). Rain and humidity are their cue to leave the nest and fly off to start new colonies, so swarm season and the wet season line up.

Seeing them near your home doesn’t automatically mean your house is infested, but it means a colony is active somewhere close. Mosquitoes and the Dengue Spike

Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and rain leaves it everywhere — plant pot trays, clogged gutters, the bucket on the balcony, a discarded cup sitting in the drain. About a week after heavy rain, the Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue hatches in whatever clean water it can find, which is why dengue cases tend to climb after the monsoon. The Ministry of Health tracks these seasonal spikes every year.

This one is mostly in your hands. The single most effective thing you can do is tip out standing water within a few days of every downpour, before the eggs have time to hatch.

Your After-Rain Prevention Checklist

A short routine before and after a heavy downpour cuts the problem down to size:

• Tip out standing water — pot trays, buckets, gutters, anything holding rainwater. Do it within 3 days, before mosquito eggs hatch.
• Clear the drains — pull leaves and rubbish out of the longkang and floor traps so they drain fast and don’t back up into the house.
• Seal the gaps — the spaces under doors and around AC pipes and utility conduits are where rats and lipas get in. A door sweep and some sealant go a long way.
• Manage food and bins — keep rubbish bins closed and dry food sealed. A flooded outdoor bin area is a buffet with a queue.
• Do a quick check after rain — a two-minute scan for mud tubes, discarded wings and ceiling noise catches the early signs while they’re still cheap to fix.
