Every year the same thing happens: the fasting month starts, the house gets a top-to-bottom clean, and pest control companies get flooded with bookings. There’s a good reason Malaysian families treat the weeks before Raya as pest control season, and it’s not superstition. The pre-Raya clean is the single best time to treat a house, the cooking marathon is exactly what draws cockroaches and ants, and the open house means guests — so the run-up to Raya lines up perfectly for getting the home sorted. Here’s why it works, and the one timing mistake to avoid.

Why do families book before Raya?

It comes down to three things happening at the same time, and each one on its own would be a good enough reason.

• The house is already being cleaned. The Raya kemas rumah clears cupboards, moves furniture and declutters — which happens to be exactly the access a good treatment needs.
• The cooking brings pests. Weeks of rendang, kuih and lemang mean crumbs, grease and overflowing bins. That’s an open invitation to lipas and semut.
• Guests are coming. The whole point of the open house is a stream of relatives and friends through your home. Nobody wants a cockroach making a guest appearance in front of the makcik.

All that activity produces exactly what pests are looking for: food crumbs on the floor, grease splatter behind the stove, sugar residue from kuih, and bins filling faster than the rest of the year.

Cockroaches and ants follow food and moisture, and the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) — the small brown one that nests in the kitchen — breeds fast in a warm, busy cooking space. A single ant trail finding your dodol, or a lipas spotted near the kuih, can sour the mood quicker than a burnt batch of biscuits. Treating before the cooking ramps up stops them getting a foothold while your kitchen is at its most tempting. And it’s not only about the fright factor — cockroaches can contaminate food and spread bacteria as they travel from the drain to the counter, which is the last thing you want around a Raya spread.
