The Small Black Ants in Your Kitchen Are Not the Same as the Big Red Ones Outside

The tiny ants on your kitchen counter and the bright red ones on your mango tree look like two versions of the same insect, but they are completely different species — usually a ghost ant or pharaoh ant indoors, and a kerengga (weaver ant) or fire ant outdoors. They live in different places, react to different baits, and the same spray can will collapse one and split the other into three new colonies. Getting the species right is the entire difference between “ants gone in 14 days” and “ants spreading to three new rooms by next month.” This is the field guide we wish more Malaysian homeowners had before they bought their first can of insecticide.

Why Species ID Changes the Treatment

Ant species in Malaysia split roughly into two groups, and the split matters more than how big or what colour they are. Some species have a single queen, a single nest, and a clear chain of command — like fire ants and weaver ants. You hit those colonies with a targeted treatment and they collapse. Other species are polygyne: multiple queens, multiple linked nests, scent-bonded into one giant super-colony spread across walls, tiles, and sometimes whole apartment blocks. Ghost ants and pharaoh ants are the two polygyne species you’ll find most often in Malaysian homes.

The polygyne species do something inconvenient when you stress them. They bud. A handful of queens take a small entourage of workers, walk a few metres away, and start a new colony. So when you spray a trail of ghost ants on Monday and the trail disappears by Wednesday, you have not won — you’ve just sent the queens shopping for new postcodes. Three weeks later, three trails, three new rooms. People blame the company, the spray, the weather, the auntie. The actual cause is one stressed colony doing what evolution shaped it to do.

That’s why the species ID matters. Identify wrong, treat wrong, problem doubles.

Ghost Ants — The Small “Black” Ones in Your Kitchen

A small ant navigating sugar crystals — ghost ants are the most common kitchen visitor in Malaysian homes

Species: Tapinoma melanocephalum. About 1.5 to 2 mm. The trick of the name: the head and thorax are dark, almost black; the abdomen and legs are pale and translucent. On a dark counter they look like small black ants. On a white tile you can see the pale half. If you’ve ever wondered why your “small black ants” looked like they were missing a body, that’s ghost ants.

Where you find them: kitchen counters, behind the kettle, along the grout line between tiles, around any food or sweet residue. They especially love the dish soap residue at the back of the sink. Trails are thin — usually a single-file line one ant wide — and follow edges and corners obsessively.

What makes them difficult: polygyne super-colony. Multiple queens spread across a building. Spray and they bud.

What works: sugar-based gel bait placed directly on the trail, then leave it alone for 10 to 14 days. The workers feed each other and the queens by mouth-to-mouth (trophallaxis), so the slow-acting active ingredient passes through the entire colony before anyone dies. The same logic that works on cockroaches works here — bait the colony, don’t chase the workers.

Pharaoh Ants — The Tiny Yellow Ones in Your Bathroom

Species: Monomorium pharaonis. About 2 mm. Uniformly yellow-brown to honey-coloured. The giveaway is the colour and the size together — if it’s tiny and golden, it’s pharaoh.

Where you find them: bathrooms, hospitals, food premises, and anywhere with both warmth and water. In Malaysian condos they often turn up around the kitchen sink and the bathroom basin within months of moving in, especially in older blocks with shared plumbing.

What makes them difficult: the worst polygyne offender. A single super-colony can span an entire apartment block. Spraying a pharaoh ant trail is one of the surest ways to make the problem multiply.

What works: protein-based bait alternated with sugar bait, depending on what stage the colony is in. This is the species where DIY most often fails not because the homeowner is doing anything wrong, but because the colony reaches into the neighbours’ units. If the trail goes through a wall or a tile gap that leads next door, professional baiting across multiple units is the only fix that lasts.

“My first time using pest control. Managed to remove ants for 1 year. I’m using them again.”

— Iman Zairul (Google review, Jul 2024). One treatment, one year clear, came back. That’s roughly what a colony collapse buys you when the species is identified correctly.

Kerengga (Weaver Ants) — The Red Ones on Your Mango Tree

Bright red ants on a surface — kerengga are the dominant outdoor red ant on Malaysian fruit trees

Species: Oecophylla smaragdina. 8 to 10 mm. Bright orange-red, long-legged, fast. They stitch leaves together into hanging football-sized nests in mango, rambutan, citrus, and palm trees.

Where you find them: outdoor fruit trees and ornamental palms across the Klang Valley. If you have a mango tree in the garden, you almost certainly have kerengga.

What makes them difficult — and useful: aggressive defenders. They bite and spray formic acid when their tree is disturbed. The bite is sharp but harmless. The reason a lot of fruit farmers leave them alone is that kerengga actively drive off other pests, which is why orchards in northern Peninsular Malaysia sometimes keep them on purpose.

What works: usually nothing needs to. If they’re not coming indoors, leave the nest alone. If they are coming indoors (rare), trace the trail to the entry point and seal it before treating the tree. Spraying the nest with a household aerosol triggers the entire colony to swarm — a much worse problem than the original.

Fire Ants — The Red Ones in Your Lawn

Species: Solenopsis geminata (and other Solenopsis species). 3 to 6 mm. Dull red-brown rather than bright orange. Build loose dome-shaped mounds in lawn, paving cracks, and the soil under outdoor planters.

Where you find them: open lawn, around the edges of paving, the soil mound at the base of the gate post. They are not the tree ants.

What makes them difficult: the sting. Fire ant venom causes a burning pustule and, in a small number of people, a serious allergic reaction. If you have small kids playing barefoot in the garden, fire ants are the species worth being decisive about.

What works: mound treatment — a slow-acting granular bait poured directly onto the mound and a perimeter of soil around it, applied in dry weather. The workers carry the granules into the nest and the colony dies inside 7 to 10 days. The mistake is drenching the mound with insecticide, which kills the workers above ground but spares the queen and the brood deep below.

Carpenter Ants and Big-Headed Ants — The Bigger Indoor Ones

Two indoor species that get mistaken for “termite-related” problems:

  • Carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.) — 6 to 12 mm, often two-tone black-and-red. They don’t eat wood like termites do — they excavate it for nesting, especially in damp or rotting timber. If you see large ants walking out of a skirting board after a kitchen leak, that’s carpenter ants. Treatment is structural (find the moisture source) plus a targeted bait into the nest cavity.
  • Big-headed ants (Pheidole megacephala) — the workers are tiny (2 to 3 mm) but the soldiers have heads so disproportionately large they look like a different species. Very common in Malaysian gardens and ground-level kitchens. Polygyne, so the same budding warning applies — gel bait, never spray.

How to Treat Each Species the Right Way

SpeciesWhereRight treatment
Ghost antKitchen counter, sink edgeSugar gel bait on trail, no spray, 10–14 days
Pharaoh antBathroom, kitchen sink, multi-unit blocksSugar + protein bait rotation, often building-wide

Indicative market pricing for ant treatment in KL and Selangor is RM150 to RM330 for a 1-visit service, or RM550 to RM800 for a 3-visit plan with a warranty.

For reference: Nomobug’s general pest control with ant treatment starts at RM299 for a 1-visit service, RM499 for the 3-visit 14-day plan with warranty, and RM1,500 for the Buy 6 Free 6 yearly plan — consistently around 10% below the typical market range. See full general pest control pricing.

A recent job in Puchong — homeowner had a ghost ant trail coming up through a grout line in the kitchen for “about three weeks.” She’d sprayed it twice, killed the visible ones each time, and the next morning it would be back, then a second trail appeared along the dining room skirting two weeks later. We baited both trails with sugar gel and stopped all spraying in the house. Trail one died inside 9 days. Trail two died inside 12. No new trails after that visit. The colony had been one super-colony under the tile bed all along — the second trail was buds from the first round of spraying.

When NOT to Call a Pest Control Company

Most pest companies will quote you the moment you say “ants.” We’d rather you keep the money. Save the call if:

  • You see one thin trail on the kitchen counter going to a specific food source. Remove the food, wipe the trail with diluted vinegar to break the scent line, place one dot of sugar gel bait at the entry point. The trail usually dies inside a week.
  • You have kerengga in your mango tree and they are not coming indoors. Leave them — they’re driving off bigger pests for free.
  • The “infestation” is a single rainy-day swarm of winged ants for a few hours and then nothing. That’s a mating flight, not a colony. Sweep up, monitor for a week.
  • You see fire ants in a single small mound, no kids playing in the area, and you’re comfortable applying granular mound bait yourself. The product is widely available in hardware shops.

Call a professional when the trails reappear in new rooms after each DIY round, when you can see ants coming out of structural cracks rather than a defined trail, when the source is clearly in the neighbour’s unit, or when fire ants are anywhere small children walk barefoot. Hafiz’s service was excellent, efficient, and well-organized, covering every critical location from the kitchen, toilet, bedroom, and living room. He explained the function of gel bait and Provcta.
I’m giving him a 5-star rating.

Overall, from the last two visits, I found many spots/nests. The gel bait and Provcta were very impressive. The effect was very noticeable; the cockroaches were no longer visible in the kitchen. There were fewer in the living room. Today was my last visit for baiting and spraying. Hopefully, there will be no more cockroaches after this, God willing.

Highly recommended!

UPDATE REVIEW:

Nomobug has just completed their second service at my home, and once again I’m extremely impressed. They carried out contingency recurring control twice, especially targeting ants and cockroaches, and I really appreciate how they honor their warranty with such professionalism. The overall appointment scheduling and service management were smooth and reliable, which makes me feel very secure and well taken care of.

I’m very satisfied with the results and would highly recommend Nomobug to anyone looking for thorough pest control. Once my current contract finishes, I will definitely be renewing it.

It’s also worth highlighting that the same technician, Faris, has been consistently handling my house. He is punctual, polite, and highly professional. After completing the treatment, he provided a detailed report outlining his findings and preventive actions, even showing me examples of the control measures implemented. This level of transparency and care is rare, and I truly value it.

Overall, Nomobug continues to exceed my expectations—reliable, professional, and trustworthy.

Detailed inspection. All the hot spots have set traps for the roaches, here’s hoping it’ll work.
The service provided by Nomobug technicians is good. All technicians who come are very ethical and careful. Provide explanations every time before starting the service. For improvement, it is hoped that there will be no manholes ‘overlooked’ in the first service. Because this will affect the quality of Nomobug services and the cockroaches will still be there. Thank you.

FAQ

Almost always ghost ants (Tapinoma melanocephalum) or pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis). Ghost ants have a dark head and pale translucent abdomen; pharaoh ants are uniformly yellow-brown and about 2 mm. Both nest indoors, both have multiple queens, and both bud if you spray them.

Two main species. Weaver ants (kerengga) are bright orange-red, 8 to 10 mm, and build leaf nests in fruit trees. Fire ants are smaller, dull red-brown, build mounds in lawn or paving cracks, and sting. Outdoor red ants almost never share a colony with indoor black ants.

Because ghost ants and pharaoh ants are polygyne. They have multiple queens and respond to chemical stress by budding — the colony splits into smaller satellite colonies. You see fewer ants for a week and three new trails the next month.

Identify the species first, then bait. For ghost and pharaoh ants, sugar-based gel bait at the trail, no spray, 10 to 14 days for colony collapse. For weaver ants outside, treat the nest tree only if they’re coming indoors. For fire ants, granular mound bait in dry weather.

No. Carpenter ants are bigger — 6 to 12 mm — typically black or two-tone, and they nest in damp or rotting wood. If you see large workers from skirting boards or window sills after a leak, the fix is structural plus targeted nest baiting.

Yes, with ghost ants and pharaoh ants almost every time. Both species respond to chemical stress by budding into smaller satellite colonies. Sugar-based gel bait that workers carry home is the right tool, not a repellent spray.

Done properly with gel bait at the trail, visible activity drops sharply after 3 to 5 days and the colony collapses inside 10 to 14 days. The first 48 hours you may see more ants — workers recruiting nest-mates to the bait. Don’t wipe, don’t spray.

If it’s a single trail along one counter for under two weeks and the trail goes to a removable food source, a tube of sugar bait handles it. Call when ants reappear in new rooms each month, when they come out of structural cracks, or when fire ants are near small children.
