Is Pest Control Safe for Cats and Dogs? What Every Malaysian Pet Owner Needs to Know
Yes, professional residential pest control is safe for cats and dogs — Nomobug uses Provecta, a BASF gel-bait and crack-and-crevice range designed for occupied homes with pets. There’s no boarding, no day trip to the vet, no airing the place out. Confine the animal to one untreated room for the 30 to 45 minutes the technician is applying product, move food and water bowls in with them, and life resumes the moment the door reopens. The two real things to know are what to do if your cat licks a gel dot (almost always fine — call the vet anyway), and the same wall-edge mop rule that applies to every Nomobug treatment but matters double when you have a floor-licking dog. Here’s the honest pet-owner version.
Why Cats and Dogs Need Slightly Different Precautions
Cats and dogs share the same basic risk profile around modern pest control — low — but they get there through different behaviour. The differences are worth knowing because they change what you actually do on the day.
Cats groom themselves obsessively. Anything that lands on their fur, paws, or whiskers ends up in their mouth within an hour. That’s why open-counter surfaces matter for cat owners specifically — a cat that walks across a sprayed counter and then licks her paws gets a much bigger dose than a dog walking through the same room. Nomobug doesn’t treat open counter surfaces with Provecta. That’s not a cat-owner concession — it’s the standard application method.
Dogs sniff and forage. The risk profile is different: a dog might find and eat a gel bait dot if it’s placed somewhere accessible, or lick the floor where a residual band sits along the wall. Small breeds and puppies are at higher relative risk because the same milligram of active ingredient is a bigger dose against their body weight. Big dogs are mostly fine but it’s still not a buffet.
The shared rule for both: the technician places gel bait inside cabinet hinges, behind the fridge, in the crack beside the stove, and inside drawer joints — places no cat or dog can physically reach. The residual goes in a thin band on the floor where it meets the wall, not on open floor in the middle of any room. This is exactly the application pattern from the family-safe pest control guide — pets and babies share the same exposure-minimised treatment.
What to Do With Pets During the Visit
The actual protocol on visit day is short:
- Pick a confinement room before we arrive. A laundry, a bedroom, the bathroom — any room you don’t want treated and that the pet can stay in for 30 to 45 minutes. Close the door. The technician will skip that room entirely.
- Move food bowls, water bowls, and the litter box into that room. Not because the room they normally sit in becomes dangerous — it doesn’t — but because most pet bowls sit flush against a wall, which is the exact line we’re applying residual to. Easier to move the bowls than to redirect a hungry cat away from a freshly treated floor edge.
- If your dog is anxious about strangers, tell us when you book. A dog that’s barking through a door is fine. A dog that’s barrelling into the kitchen mid-spray is not. The team will plan the visit timing around naps or schedule for after a long walk if that’s what your household needs.
- For senior pets or animals on medication, mention it. We won’t do anything different in the application, but knowing means we can advise specifically on confinement timing or skip a particular room.
When the visit is done, the technician will tell you the rooms have been treated and walk you through the after-care rule below. You open the confinement room and the cat goes back to inspecting the cabinet hinges as if nothing happened. The dog sniffs the technician’s shoes by the door and that’s the entire workflow.
“They are very knowledgeable about all types of pests and also very helpful. The technician even helped me spray lizard repellent inside and outside my house because I was really afraid of them. I’m very happy with the service they provided.”
— Farida Aswan (Google review, Jul 2024). The technician reads the room — what the household actually needs, not just the booking form. The same attention applies when there are pets in the picture.
If Your Cat Licks the Bait or Your Dog Eats It
This is the call we get a few times a year, and the honest answer is almost always: it’s fine, but call the vet anyway. Here’s why.
Provecta gel baits are formulated with bittering agents — chemicals that taste foul to mammals but don’t bother cockroaches or ants. A cat that gets curious about a gel dot usually licks once, makes the face cats make when they’ve eaten something offensive, and walks away. The dose she’s actually ingested is well below anything that would produce clinical signs.
What to actually do if it happens:
- Don’t panic, don’t induce vomiting at home. Induced vomiting can do more harm than the original exposure for these low doses.
- Call your vet. Have the specific Provecta product name ready — the technician can tell you over WhatsApp. Quote the animal’s weight.
- Watch for the four signs over the next 12 hours: unusual lethargy, vomiting, excessive drooling, ataxia (wobbly walking). Any of those — to the vet.
- Most animals show nothing. Healthy adult cats and medium-to-large dogs typically have no symptoms at all from a single accidental ingestion.
- Tell us. Send a WhatsApp so we know to move the bait placement to a less accessible spot on the next visit.
Smaller dogs and toy breeds warrant a more cautious vet check because the same milligrams against a smaller body weight is a relatively larger dose. Same advice applies — don’t panic, don’t induce vomiting, ring the vet with the product name and the dog’s weight.
The Wall-Edge Mop Rule (Matters Double With Pets)
The one after-care rule every Nomobug customer hears before we leave applies to pet households exactly the same way as everyone else — but the consequences of getting it wrong are bigger when there’s a floor-grooming animal involved.
The residual sits as a thin band along the floor where it meets the wall — inside the kitchen, inside the rest of the house, and along the outside of the building. Insects travel along those wall edges; that’s why the band is there. If you mop the wall-edge strip with soap and water, you wash off the residual within hours, the treatment is over, and the cockroaches come back inside the warranty window.
After a visit, do not mop or wash these three zones:
- The floor along the edge of interior walls.
- The kitchen floor — especially the strip next to the walls and under cabinets.
- The floor outside the house along the exterior walls.
What you can mop normally: the centre of every floor in the house, countertops, the dining table, pet feeding mats, the litter box area (move the box, mop the open floor, put it back). Pet households often want to scrub everything within an hour of the technician leaving — completely understandable, completely the wrong impulse. Mop the middle of the kitchen if you must. Stay off the strip along the wall for the next 8 to 12 weeks and the warranty period stays honest.
Pet-specific addendum: if your dog has a favourite sleeping spot tucked against a wall, slide the bed 30 cm away from the skirting after the visit. Same for any cat tower or cat tree positioned flush against a wall. The point is to keep the animal off the residual band, not to relocate them out of the house.
Fish, Birds, Reptiles — The Three Exceptions
Cats and dogs are easy because they share a body plan and a metabolism class with humans. The exotic-pet exceptions are where pest control actually does need more care.
- Fish. Fish are highly sensitive to airborne residues even at concentrations far below what affects mammals. Before the technician arrives, cover the aquarium with plastic sheet or cling film and turn off the air pump and any open filtration. Resume normal operation an hour after the technician leaves. If you have a large reef tank or a sensitive species (discus, marine fish), let us know in advance — we can stage the treatment to minimise application time near the tank.
- Birds. Birds have extremely efficient respiratory systems — a feature that made canaries famous in mines for the same reason. Move the cage into the confinement room for the visit, cover with a light cloth, and resume normal placement when the technician leaves. If you have an aviary or a parrot that can’t easily be moved, talk to us before booking.
- Reptiles. Generally fine inside their vivariums, which are typically sealed glass with a mesh top. For the application window, slide a sheet of cardboard over the mesh top to seal it. Resume normal heating and ventilation when the technician leaves. Open-tank setups (tortoise tables, free-roaming geckos) get moved to the confinement room like a cat would.
The household that gets this most wrong is the one with three cats, two fish tanks, and an Instagram bearded dragon — pet-dense homes are common in Malaysia and we treat them every week. Tell us what’s in the house and we’ll plan around it. Most of these precautions take 90 seconds at the door.
A recent job in Ampang — household with three cats, ghost ants in the kitchen and pantry, owner had been refusing to call any pest control company for over a year because she’d been told by another operator that her cats would have to be boarded for 24 hours. We talked her through the Provecta application on WhatsApp before booking. On the day, she confined all three cats to the spare bedroom with their bowls and the litter box for 35 minutes. We treated the kitchen, dining, and the perimeter outside. Cats came out of the room when we left. By the third visit at day 14 the ant trails were gone. The owner messaged a fortnight later asking when we could come back for the next round — that was the moment we knew the cats hadn’t been the actual barrier.

WhatsApp usWhen NOT to Call a Pest Control Company
If the problem is small, the lowest-exposure answer for a pet household is also the cheapest one — handle it yourself with a tube of gel bait placed where the cat physically cannot reach it. Save the call if:
- You’ve seen 2 or 3 cockroaches across the last month and no egg cases. A pea-sized dot of professional-grade sugar gel bait deep inside the back corner of a kitchen cabinet handles it in 2 weeks. No spray, no professional visit. Same logic for permanent cockroach removal.
- One thin trail of small ants on the kitchen counter going to a removable food source. The DIY ant protocol is here — entirely bait-based, no spray. Place the gel inside the cabinet, not on the counter your cat naps on.
- One big American cockroach on the porch at night near the drain. Outdoor problem. Cap the drain.
Call a professional when the infestation is established — multiple sightings per day, visible egg cases, multiple ant trails, or rats in the ceiling. At that scale leaving it untreated is worse for the household (pets included) than a properly applied Provecta treatment with the wall-edge mop rule. CUSTOMER REVIEWS

I’m giving him a 5-star rating.
Overall, from the last two visits, I found many spots/nests. The gel bait and Provcta were very impressive. The effect was very noticeable; the cockroaches were no longer visible in the kitchen. There were fewer in the living room. Today was my last visit for baiting and spraying. Hopefully, there will be no more cockroaches after this, God willing.
Highly recommended!
