You are pulling weeds, or your kid is sitting on the grass, and then everything is on fire at once. That is the signature of semut api — not one sharp sting but ten, because they swarm up the foot or the hand first and sting together. Fire ants sting rather than bite, and a single ant can sting several times in a row, which is why one encounter leaves a cluster of marks instead of a single spot. Is it actually semut api?

The species behind the name in Malaysia is the tropical fire ant, Solenopsis geminata. It is one of the most common ants in the country anywhere people have disturbed the ground — housing estates, road verges, school fields, construction sites, taman playgrounds.

What to look for:

• Reddish-brown, with a darker abdomen. Not black, not the bright orange of a weaver ant.
• Different sizes in the same nest. This one is the giveaway. Workers run from roughly 3mm to 6mm, and the biggest ones have a disproportionately large, square head. Most ant species in your garden are all one size; fire ants come in a range.
• Nesting in soil, in the open sun. Loose crumbly earth, often a low mound rather than a tall hill in our climate, usually against a kerb, a fence line, a paving edge, or in the middle of a lawn.
• The response to disturbance. Tap the mound and they pour out fast and go upward — up the trowel, up the shoe. Most ants scatter. Fire ants come at you.

One thing worth clearing up, because it circulates constantly: the notorious red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta, the one behind the eradication programmes in Australia and the US, is a different species and is not established in Malaysia. What you have in the garden is the tropical fire ant, which is unpleasant enough without the imported reputation.

Semut api, semut charlie, or kerengga?

These three get mixed up in every Malaysian group chat, and the treatment for each is completely different — including one that is not an ant at all.

The semut charlie one matters most, because the instinct when something lands on your arm at night is to slap it, and slapping is precisely the action that causes the injury. If the streak on your neck looks like someone dragged a hot wire across it, that was a beetle, not an ant, and no amount of ant treatment will help.

What does a fire ant sting do to you?

Fire ant venom is unusual. Most stinging insects deliver a protein-based venom; fire ant venom is mostly alkaloid, and it kills a small patch of tissue right where it goes in. That is why the mark behaves so strangely compared with a mosquito bite.

The sequence, more or less on schedule every time:

• Immediately: a sharp burning pain, out of proportion to the size of the insect. Hence the name — api, fire.
• Within minutes: a red welt with a small central point, often in a cluster or a rough circle where several ants stung together.
• 2 to 48 hours later: a small white or yellow pustule forms at the centre. This is normal. It is not pus from an infection; it is the tissue reaction to the venom.
• Over 3 to 10 days: it dries, crusts and fades. It can itch stubbornly through that whole window.

The pustule is not the problem. Popping it is. An intact pustule is a normal reaction that heals on its own. A burst one is an open wound on a leg that has been in a Malaysian garden, and that is what turns a two-day nuisance into a clinic visit and a course of antibiotics.

What should you do after being stung?

In order, and none of it is complicated:

• Brush them off hard and fast. Do not pick at them one by one — they cling with their jaws and keep stinging while you negotiate. Sweep the whole area with a hand or a cloth and move away from the nest.
• Wash with soap and water. Plain and boring and the most useful step.
• Cold compress for the burning and swelling. Ten to fifteen minutes.
• Hydrocortisone cream or an oral antihistamine for the itch, which is the part that actually bothers people for the next few days. Both are over the counter at any pharmacy.
• Leave the pustule alone and keep it clean and dry. If it is somewhere that will rub, cover it loosely.

Now the part that is not a home remedy question. Get emergency help — 999 or the nearest hospital — if the reaction spreads beyond the sting site: hives across the body, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, a racing pulse, vomiting or faintness. Tropical fire ant venom is a documented cause of anaphylaxis, and that reaction is a timing problem, not a wait-and-see one. Also worth a doctor: a very large number of stings at once, stings in a young child who is distressed, or a site that becomes hot, spreading and more painful after several days rather than less.

Why are they in your garden in the first place?

Because you gave them the exact conditions they want, mostly by accident. Fire ants like open, sunny, disturbed soil with moisture nearby — which is a precise description of a Malaysian housing estate.

• New landscaping or fresh turf. Imported topsoil and turf rolls are a common way a colony arrives in a garden that never had one.
• Building work next door. Sand piles, cleared ground and disturbed earth are prime nesting habitat, and the colony spreads outward from there into the neighbouring gardens.
• Lawn edges, kerbs and paving joints. Warm, stable, easy to tunnel under.
• Anything sweet or greasy outdoors. Fallen fruit, pet food left on the porch, an outdoor bin that leaks.
• Rain. The big one here. Their nest is in the ground, so when the ground floods the colony moves — into raised planters, pots, and sometimes under a door and into the house. Half the people who tell us fire ants “suddenly appeared” have simply had three days of storms.

A family in Rawang called us after their son was stung across both feet on their own lawn — new turf laid about two months earlier, and by then five separate mounds along the fence line and one right beside the swing. They had been pouring hot water on whichever mound they could see, which is exactly why there were five. We baited the whole lawn and the fence line rather than the mounds, told them to keep off the grass for a fortnight and to stop treating individual mounds, and came back twice. Activity was down heavily by the second visit and gone by the third. The turf was where it came in; the boiling water was what spread it.

Why does attacking the sarang make it worse?

This is the single most useful thing in this article, so it gets said plainly: the mound you can see is not the colony. It is the roof.

Tropical fire ant colonies can carry several queens, and in this region they commonly spread by budding — a few queens and a group of workers simply walk away and start again a short distance off. Nothing about that requires a mating flight or a new arrival from outside. It only requires stress.

So the standard homeowner sequence goes: pour boiling water on the mound, kill several thousand workers, miss the queens sitting deeper in the soil, and watch the survivors relocate. Two weeks later there are two mounds where there was one, both a few metres from the original, and the lawn has a dead brown patch where the water went. Digging it out does the same thing faster. Repellent sprays over the ground do it too, in a quieter way — the colony detects the treated soil and shifts out of it.

What actually clears them?

Bait, patience, and treating an area rather than a mound.

Fire ant baits are a food carrier with a slow-acting active ingredient in it. Foraging workers pick it up, carry it home, and feed it to the queens and the brood. Slow is the entire point — a bait that killed the forager on the spot would never reach the part of the colony that produces more ants.

What that means in practice:

• Bait the whole affected area, along the fence line, kerb edges and lawn, not just the visible mound. You are aiming at the foraging range, which is much larger than the nest.
• Do not spray anything repellent over the same ground. This is the most common reason a bait job fails: someone treats the lawn with a general insecticide afterwards, the foragers avoid the treated soil, and the bait never gets picked up. Bait or spray, not both.
• Expect nothing to happen for a week. Then a sharp drop. Judging a bait after three days is how people conclude that bait does not work and go back to boiling water.
• Keep it dry. Bait applied just before an afternoon storm is bait washed into the drain. Morning application on dry ground, on a day that looks reasonable.
• Follow up. One round rarely finishes a garden with several colonies in it. A second and third pass at roughly two-week intervals is normal, which is exactly why our own ant work is structured as a 3-visit plan rather than a single spray.
